Throughout my career as a lawyer, teacher and labor leader, books have remained my constant companion - stuffed into a briefcase, overflowing on my bedside table, stacked on my desk at work.

Books have carried me to distant worlds, opened new doors and made me feel empathy, compassion, anger, fear, joy, acceptance - and everything in between.

In 1998, Vanity Fair asked me to write a big piece for them on the 50th anniversary of the New York City Ballet.

My life, to a great extent, had been spent at and with the New York City Ballet, and I decided to try it.

It was very scary, writing about something I loved so much and had such strong opinions about.
